Luck or Chance? Ask Idrea Lippman of Lucky You Resale Boutique

A Paw in the Door* ByDiane Haithman and Heidi

You get more than a bargain at Lucky You, a new Valley Village business that deals in second chances.

One very special customer recently got lucky at Lucky You, the Valley Village resale boutique taken over in early February by Idrea Lippman. Readers of this column know Idrea as the former plus-size model who teaches the highly popular Attitudes class at Studio City’s Body Women Only Fitness Center. Now, she is developing a new set of fans through a new venture.

But first, back to the customer, who holds the record for the largest dollar amount spent at one time at Lucky You to date: $312. And it’s hard to drop that much at Lucky You, where resale items are always less than $100 but seem to fall mostly in the $5-50 range. This customer walked out with 6 pairs of shoes (including Lucite pumps and a pair of Jessica Simpson pumps), faux pearls, rhinestones and a Chloe gown in bright tangerine chiffon– the spring color for 2012, according to the buyer.

Yes, this was one very happy cross-dresser, Idrea recalls. He was especially delighted to find size 10 1/2 shoes and size 12 gowns to flatter his manly physique. When he goes treasure-hunting at most consignment stores, he confided, the clothing is not only expensive, but usually small. “I’m not a size 6,” he explained to Idrea, rather unnecessarily. He’s distributing Idrea’s card to all his friends (10% discount), and Idrea is under strict orders to call immediately should that perfect little black dress with no zipper become available his size.

But you don’t have to be a cross-dresser, or a size 12, to find something you like at Lucky You. In fact, hurry – in March, traditional men’s clothing is 20% off. And in the women’s department, you can be a size 16, a size 6 or anything in between. Or not even a 6. Just ask tiny CalArts student Sasha Swedlund, whom Heidi and I met on our Thursday visit to Lucky You. Sasha appears to be a size 0. A fine arts major who also teaches African drumming and dancing, Sasha finds that Idrea’s offbeat selection suits her eclectic tastes. She watched enchanted while Idrea slung a vintage gold mesh snake belt around her neck – why not make it a necklace? “It’s hot, right?” Idrea asked.

Heidi didn’t buy anything, -- she only wears bandanas -- but was in her usual state of retail bliss on the floor guarding the merchandise while I chatted with Idrea between customers. Actually, this was not our first visit – Heidi and I showed up for the March 4 grand opening, where my husband Alan and I saw some great bargains and Heidi kept her eye on the cheese tray. We came because we liked Idrea’s idea (we also like the phrase “Idrea’s idea”): To create a shop where a woman without much money could come in and get outfitted for a job interview or important social event for under $50. “Rich women love a bargain, and poor women need one,” she said.

Idrea does not take clothing on consignment, but is willing to either purchase or trade (though be advised she doesn’t need any more stuff until after April 18 or so, so right now just stop in to shop). The store is on Magnolia Blvd. at Whitsett, across from that post office that looks like a Grimm's fairy tale castle.

The venture got started when Idrea was laid off from her other job besides teaching at the gym. Not sure what to do, she discussed the situation with her four dogs, two Jack Russells, one Dalmatian, and Monty (“I don’t know what Monty is.”) They didn’t say much, but listened intently. Because of her prior retail experience, she and the dogs decided she should search Craigslist for a retail job. She found one – working for $10 an hour at this very location. Little did she know that, in about two months, she would be asked if she was interested in buying the store. “It was serendipity,” she said. At age 58, she’d been presented with the opportunity to reinvent herself.

Of course, Idrea hadn’t really thought too hard about the money part of it. When she told her son Devon about the deal, he gently asked where the start-up funds would come from. Idrea suggested, uh, maybe her severance check from the old job? No, the realistic Devon said. He would give her the money to launch the business. Maybe he’d get paid back someday. He’d take that risk.

On our first visit to the shop for the grand opening, Heidi and I wandered to back door and noticed the words “SECOND CHANCE” etched into the cement doorstep. This time, we asked about it. Idrea said the words were there when she bought the business. She had the step painted white so people wouldn’t trip on it, but left the words intact. “I feel like it absolutely applies to me finding this place,” she said.

Or to those who come into Lucky You, looking for just the right clothes to go out there and find their own second chance.

The allure of the little black dress was once summed up by Christian Dior who said: ‘You can wear black in any moment of the day, no matter your age. You can wear black with almost any occasion. A black dress is essential for every woman.’

Created by Coco Chanel in the 1920s the little black dress was ranked as the nation’s most staple designs over the London Underground map and Coca-Cola bottle.

WHETHER looking back at styles of the 1960s or forward to more cutting-edge trends, round sunglasses are increasingly in fashion's focus.

John Lennon's wire-rimmed glasses of the '60s and '70s (he liked the design in both optical and sunglasses) have become a classic style in eyewear, while in the past year the Olsen twins, Ashley and Mary-Kate, have been popularising oversized fashion-forward styles.

Lucky You Resale Boutique Reopens; Crash Damage Closes Second Store

The Valley Village consignment shop is under new management and its second location, Lucky You Too for Kids, will be replaced by a children's store named Sandbox Rebel.

Idrea Lippman had been out of a job and looking for work when her luck stepped in at the right moment.

The 58-year-old had worked at _Lucky You Resale Boutique_ in Valley Village for three months a while back, and when the previous owner, Dina Kimmel, offered to sell the store to Lippman, she jumped on the opportunity.

When a vehicle crashed last November into _Lucky You Too for Kids, the boutique’s second location on the same block specializing in children’s clothing, the damage to the structure and inventory made it difficult for the previous owner to keep the business afloat, Lippman told me.

Both spaces were eventually sold, and the children's store will be replaced by Sandbox Rebel, another kid's clothing and accessories boutique.

The new Lucky You re-opened February 1, 2012, and I stop in on the store’s first day of extended hours. Outside is a sale rack of clothing for 70 percent off, and when I walk in I'm greeted by giant framed posters of James Dean, Audrey Hepburn and other classic Hollywood stars.

There's a good selection of denim, ranging from little-known brands to designer names like Lucky Brand and 7 for All Mankind; evening gowns from LBDs to fancy beaded dresses; and casual wear from BCBG, Calvin Klein, Bebe and many other contemporary labels. In the back, there's more clothing alongside trendy shoes, bags and accessories.

As I'm browsing, Lippman and her employee Alla (who preferred to give just her first name for this story) are busy pricing new merchandise. The two argue playfully like an old married couple, and it seems like they're longtime friends who know each other like the backs of their own hands. I find out later that Alla had only been working at the store for a few weeks.

Alla, who lives just down the street from the store, told me she was on her usual morning walk when she “felt compelled” to take a different route. She found herself walking into the store, and that’s how she and Lippman “just found each other.”

It’s easy to see why one would be compelled to visit Lucky You. Lippman’s positive energy is undeniable, and it shows on the walls of her boutique, literally.

“Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world,” reads one wall, quoting Marilyn Monroe. There are other inspirational passages throughout the store, and Lippman says she hopes her boutique can serve as a haven for women.

“If I could rename it, I'd call it Lucky You Haven Boutique!” she jokes.

Both women have experience in the fashion industry – Lippman, a former plus-size model, owned a plus-size women’s clothing boutique called Great Changes in Studio City for 14 years; Alla’s background is on the manufacturing side of fashion. This isn’t the first time Lippman has been on Patch – she was featured on Studio City’s Patch for her work as aerobics instructor at Body Women Only Fitness Center.

On the day I visit, a long-time customer is there selling her clothing. Lippman ends up buying two pairs of Marc Jacobs shoes, a black velvet floral Betsey Johnson dress (which she later shows off on the store's Facebook page), a black evening bag and a few other items from her. The woman tells me she used to live down the street, and that she's been coming to the store for 12 years. She's seen the store change hands a few times, she says, and despite moving to Sherman Oaks, she still loves stopping in every once in a while.

After the customer leaves, Alla and Lippman start pricing their latest buys right away. The Marc Jacobs shoes are priced reasonably, and Lippman says most of the items in the store are under $50.

She wants all women to be able to get fashion at an affordable price, she says, adding that she didn't want Lucky You to simply be a thrift store. Anything that doesn't sell after two to three weeks from the sale rack outside is donated to the shelters downtown. Her mantra? "Women who have money love a bargain; women who don't... need one!"

"Very chic, selection. Cute boutique style complete with dressing rooms, and A/C. Located right next to the Pizza hut on Magnolia and Whitsett. Jeans and dresses, to shoes and jewelry. All kinds of accesories from today's hottest fashions at very reasonable prices."

"I received absolutely wonderful service at this store and scored a pair of like-new Citizens for under $30. Done. I was welcomed and attended to, given a second opinion and chatted about child development (one of my favorite topics) with the lady running the boutique -- I have a feeling that she may have been the owner. The items are fantastic; a better jean selection than your typical Crossroads for an even better price? Heck yes. This boutique is quite small, so service is a huge factor in your impression of the store on a whole. So hopefully, if the girl I chatted with was the owner, she will hire more staff like her. :) Check out this store if you're on your way to the Galleria for jeans or if you're in the area and have half an hour to kill. :)"
